The Fall Board of Governors Meeting will be held Nov. 2-4 at The Lodge and Spa at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Ga. The registration deadline is Friday, Oct. 26. DISASTER LEGAL ASSISTANCE

A toll free legal aid hotline is now available to victims of Georgia’s recently declared disaster areas in Baker, Crisp, Decatur, Dougherty, Early, Grady, Lee, Miller, Mitchell, Seminole, Terrell, Thomas and Worth Counties. Georgia victims facing legal issues who are unable to afford a lawyer may call 1-866-584-8027 (toll-free) or 404-527-8793 (local) between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday to request assistance. REGISTER FOR A FREE ACCESS TO JUSTICE CLE

Supreme Court of Georgia Chief Justice Harold D. Melton will be the keynote speaker for the CLE “Eliminating Barriers to Justice V” on Wednesday, Oct. 31, at the Georgia State University College of Law. The 5.5-hour CLE will address “Interpreters and Technology: Methods for Access to Justice for Persons who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing or Visually Impaired and Updates on Access to Justice for Persons who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing or Visually Impaired Including through Technology.” One hour of professionalism credit will be offered. The event is sponsored by the Judicial Council of Georgia’s Commission on Interpreters, the State Bar of Georgia Access to Justice Committee and others. 2018 CONVOCATION ON PROFESSIONALISM

Please join the Chief Justice’s Commission on Professionalism and the Institute for Continuing Legal Education for the 2018 Convocation on “Professionalism, Professionalism and the Global Community – Professionalism Values: Competence, Civility, Character, Commitment to the Rule of Law and the Public Good.” The event will be held Friday, Nov. 30, from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta. A reception will follow (for an additional cost), at which the members of the Atlanta Consular Corps are the special invited guests.

CHIEF JUSTICE THOMAS O. MARSHALL PROFESSIONALISM AWARDS | CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

The Bench and Bar Committee invites you to nominate one lawyer or one judge who has demonstrated the highest professional conduct and paramount reputation for professionalism for its 18th annual Chief Justice Thomas O. Marshall Professionalism Awards. You may nominate one lawyer and one judge candidate, but you must use a separate form for each nomination. A letter of recommendation outlining the candidate’s background must also accompany the form. ANNUAL FICTION WRITING COMPETITION | DEADLINE JAN. 11

The Editorial Board of the Georgia Bar Journal will again sponsor its annual Fiction Writing Competition. The purposes of this competition are to enhance interest in the Journal , to encourage excellence in writing by members of the Bar and to provide an innovative vehicle for the illustration of the life and work of lawyers.
