Gov. Kemp’s ShelterPlace Order and Essential Legal Services

Gov. Kemp’s Shelter-in-Place Order and Essential Legal Services

Bar Members:

Early today, Gov. Kemp issued a temporary shelter-in-place order to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and ensure the safety and health of Georgia citizens. All residents and visitors of the state of Georgia are required to remain in their home or place of residence, and take all possible precautions to limit social interaction to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The stay-in-place order provides for limited exceptions, which include obtaining essential services such as groceries and medical supplies, performing certain minimum basic business operations, and participating in critical infrastructure. The order specifies that critical infrastructure includes entities that provide legal services.

Entities providing legal services, such as law firms, that continue to work out of an office location should implement measures to mitigate the spread of the virus. That includes requiring employees who exhibit signs of illness not to report to work, requiring handwashing and sanitation within your place of business, and to the extent possible, implementing telework.

My hope is that you all remain safe and healthy as our profession continues to grapple with this national public health emergency.

Sincerely,

Darrell Sutton
